Squarespace is a good choice when what matters most about a site is how it looks. People usually look for an alternative for one of four reasons: they need several languages without a separate service, they need a lower price, they need an artist's documents, or they don't want to build the site themselves. Below are five options, with an honest note on each: who it suits and who it doesn't.
In short
Prices are per month with annual billing, before tax.
| Platform | Price/month | Several languages | Shop | Artist's documents | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Squarespace (for comparison) | Core $23¹ | separate pages or Weglot | ✓, 0% from Core | — | those who care most about design |
| Wix | Core $29¹ | ✓ (Wix Multilingual) | ✓ from Core | — | those who want a free hand in the editor |
| Pixpa | $9–12² | via GTranslate | ✓ | — | photographers and anyone watching the budget |
| Format | $17–26³ | via Weglot | ✓ | — | photographers with client shoots |
| Artlogic | from £95⁴ | from £241 | on request | partly | studios and galleries |
| ArtFond | from €15 (€179/year) | 7, one catalogue | ✓, 0% commission⁵ | ✓ | artists who run their practice themselves |

If you want a free hand in the editor: Wix
More than 2,000 templates and an editor where any element can go anywhere. Several languages are built in. It costs more than Squarespace, and a Wix site can't be moved to another host: if you ever leave, you build it again from scratch.
If you're watching the budget: Pixpa
The cheapest of the options: the shop is already there on the $9 plan. It's built for photographers first, with client galleries and print sales. Several languages come through a machine-translation widget, so the texts are translated by a machine, not by you.
If you're a photographer with client work: Format
Client galleries, shoot contracts, file delivery. The shop on the Pro plan is limited to 15 products. Several languages come through Weglot, a third-party service with its own subscription.
If you run a studio with a team: Artlogic
It isn't a website builder but a system for galleries: inventory, sales through offers and invoices, private views for collectors. For an artist working alone, it's a different scale and a different price.
If you need documents, not only a site: ArtFond
ArtFond starts from the same place: a site, your own domain, a shop. Then comes what builders don't have, all drawn from a single catalogue of your artworks: the portfolio PDF, CV, and artist statement; a certificate of authenticity for every artwork, with QR verification; a board of open calls and document packs for applications; QR labels for an exhibition (from the Pro plan); papers for taking artworks abroad. Seven languages without a separate service. The technical side is ours.
What ArtFond doesn't have: an editor where you can move every pixel, and client galleries where the client picks and downloads photos from a shoot. You can show artworks privately: a private selection by link, with a password and an expiry date, for a collector or a curator (on the Unlimited plan).
How to move your artworks from Squarespace
Give us a link to your site: ArtFond reads the artworks with their titles and descriptions straight from Squarespace and builds a draft. You look at it before deciding anything. Squarespace itself exports pages and the blog as XML and products as CSV; the design doesn't export anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep my domain? Yes. The domain is yours, and you move it wherever you like.
Do I have to close my Squarespace site to try something else? No. Wix has a free plan; Pixpa, Format, and ArtFond have a free trial period; your old site keeps running while you look.
What's the cheapest? Pixpa, from $9 a month with a shop of up to 10 products. ArtFond is from €15 a month on annual billing (€179 a year), with the site, the shop, and the documents.
Will a new site help me sell more? A clear artwork page with a price, a Buy button, and a convenient way to pay raise the likelihood of a sale, but don't guarantee it, and that's true of every platform on this list. No site brings buyers on its own: it receives the people who are already interested in your work.
